Feel Your Best When Flying

If you’re a frequent flyer, you've probably experienced puffiness or swelling in your hands, ankles, or face while traveling. That’s because air travel, particularly over extended durations, creates “cutaneous puffiness,” which is characterised by swelling or bloating of the skin, notably around the eyes and extremities, as explained by CN Traveler. Dehydration, fluctuations in cabin pressure, inactivity, and high-sodium airline meals are the common causes of this puffiness.

To combat swelling and feel your best when flying:

  • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after flights - add low-sodium electrolyte powder to further hydrate
  • Limit consumption of high-sodium, processed snacks
  • Pack convenient, water-rich snacks on board, like fruit and vegetables
  • Avoid drinking alcohol as it is dehydrating
  • Practice ankle circles, calf raises, leg lifts, and seated marching to promote blood flow and reduce fluid buildup
  • Bring compression garments, such as compression socks, as they help with circulation
