European Union Plans to Launch Entry/Exit System in October 2025
The European Union has announced that its Entry/Exit System (EES) will be launched in October 2025. This automated IT program will function as a registration system for travelers from the UK, US, and other non-EU countries who do not require a visa to enter the EU. It will apply to those visiting the EU and Schengen Zone for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. The EES modernizes border management by increasing the efficiency and quality of processes at the border and replacing passport stamping. The EU has stated that they will inform about a specific start date but have opted for a phased rollout of the EES over six months, with the first border controls coming into effect in October 2025.
Alongside the EES, the EU plans to introduce the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enhance border security. The ETIAS is expected to launch in late 2026 with a transitional grace period, making it mandatory by 2027. Under this system, visa-exempt travelers from non-EU countries, including the U.S. and UK, must obtain authorization before short stays in the Schengen Area. The process involves completing an online application, providing personal details, answering security questions, and paying a €7 fee. The authorization will be electronically linked to the traveler’s passport and remain valid for three years or until the passport expires. If the passport expires during this period, a new application and fee will be required.
Travelers will be required to complete their own registrations prior to travel. For more information, click here. We will continue to update travelers during this transition. Cain agents are available for support as needed.
