DOT Implements Enhanced Protections for Travelers With Disabilities

Effective January 16, 2025, the Department of Transportation (DOT) is issuing new protections for people with disabilities in commercial air travel.

The "Final Rule Ensuring Safe Accommodations for Air Travelers with Disabilities Using Wheelchairs" sets new standards for assistance ensuring airlines provide safe and dignified assistance for individuals with disabilities; mandates comprehensive, hands-on training for airline staff and contractors assisting passengers with disabilities and managing their wheelchairs; and outlines specific measures airlines must follow to address situations involving damaged or delayed wheelchairs during travel.
